is the exact relation? How would I compute the appropriate number for my

Try umount the partition (even if the mount appears to have failed) prior
to trying smbmount again. I get the error you mention if I try smbmount
and have a problem in password authentication. umount then smbmount seems
work for me.

hda refers to the MBR, and hda1 refers to the PBR (partition boot record)
which is where windows keeps it's loader. If you install to hda1... windows will
die a tragic silent death...

And your mount point isn't visible, although you can cd to it? I've had
the same thing happen (although not lately).
What I do is:
/etc/init.d/samba stop
then:
/etc/init.d/samba start
then it works as advertised.

I just had the exact same problem symptoms (including the failed retry with
specific arch) as you a few days ago, but with a 2.2 kernel build.
There are some tools out there that have come default on my slink system,
namely ncpmount. It works well with NDS 8 and NetWare 5.1 (I have tested on
lower versions of both). I belive IPX support has to be loaded, though, dont
quote me on that one.
