I seem to have found out a way to reproduce the problem.
1/ Open a file with Kate.
2/ Modify the file.
3/ Save change and keep the file open.
4/ Modify the file with another editor.
5/ Go back to kate.
6/ Tell Kate to reload when it complains that the file's been externally
