Window manager mange windows only. They cannot restore the
terminal context because they know nothing about it.
BUT multi-gnome-terminal for example has the save session feature
(you can even make it automatic, in case of crash the session is
retore).

This looks like a problem that was reported against X for some setup
which use agp drivers .
The first time after boot that X (or kdm) started the video driver was
loaded and called it s agp counterpart. The loading took too long and X
failed with a cannot find card. This looks like your problem.
I use ldap ( server on localhost no certificate, no encryption)
and have no problem with kdm.
A few ideas , thoug i don t think it will fix the problem you have:
- use_first_pass should not be used for session. we either use the unix
env or the ldap one (shell and such)

I forgot to notice that kdm has a lot of controls over who can login .
They are manageable through kcontrol.
