I have the same problem with krdc, also with a Mac OS X VNC server.
I tried gvncviewer as an alternative and it has the same problem:

Looking more into this issue, I discovered that oggs are played just
fine when they are part of the Amarok collection.
But oggs are not shown in the file browser (in the context pane of
Amarok) anymore with the vlc backend, but they are there with the xine
backend.
