I stumbled upon the same today.
Searching is a base functionality in my opinion.
Kmail should to it's very best to ensure that it is working,
and if search does not work, it MUST provide information why that is.

Since I moved from KDE 3.5 to KDE 4.2, kalarm crahes on every startup.
