Apparently this bug is still there, but I'm not sure if it has to do with OOo
or KDE.

So it seems that bumping some dependencies somewhere should be enough
to get rid of this.

Hi,
how can I make OpenOffice (2.0.1-1) detect Java runtime environments
other than Sun's JRE? The Options dialog only shows Sun JRE. I have
kaffe and gij installed.

Right, and the working system had gij or kaffe, I think. But switching
it to Sun 1.5 made the bug appear on that system too. So it seems to be
related to that.
