Downgrading cairo to the version in testing (1.10.2-7) fixes the problem for me:
$ LANG=C sudo aptitude install libcairo2/testing

Yeah, known. (3.4.x would have just "worked" because the tests there wouldn't
be run at
all - but thankfully that one was stuck in BD-Uninstallab
