ok, two more hours spent. removed every TTF package. When I removed xfonts-scalable-nonfree and msttcorefonts, things started to work. I cleaned up everything, and then reinstalled each to see if I could reproduce the problem, however, after installing both, Openoffice still works. I must only

Followed instructions regarding fonts. Setup program now has visible fonts. OpenOffice Writer still shows no fonts. I've deleted and purged all packages, reinstalled, rerun the setup druid. I removed all extra fonts on my system, resulting in a very ugly desktop. When I remove TrueType fonts,
