I tried the old XftConfig file, and Writer still has menu fonts.
So, something that I uninstalled, purged, and reinstalled in the True
Type fonts appears to have fixed it.

ok, two more hours spent.
removed every TTF package. When I removed xfonts-scalable-nonfree and
msttcorefonts, things started to work. I cleaned up everything, and
then reinstalled each to see if I could reproduce the problem, however,
after installing both, Openoffice still works.

Followed instructions regarding fonts.
Setup program now has visible fonts.
OpenOffice Writer still shows no fonts.
I've deleted and purged all packages, reinstalled, rerun the setup
druid.
I removed all extra fonts on my system, resulting in a very ugly
desktop.
