ok, two more hours spent. removed every TTF package. When I removed xfonts-scalable-nonfree and msttcorefonts, things started to work. I cleaned up everything, and then reinstalled each to see if I could reproduce the problem, however, after installing both, Openoffice still works.
I must only assume that one of the font files was broken, but not broken enough to have caused a segfault. I had some settings in my XftConfig, and in my .gtkrc that I have restored, and things still appear to be working. I will use my old XftConfig and try to reproduce the problem again and will report any failures.
