Problem solved: I had `bitmap-mule' installed, which caused the silly
display mess-up. Working beautifully now! Let me just state that
there is no problem in this regard with the Debian package. In fact,
the UTF-8 support would be a very nice package to add to Debian. :-)

that nobody else had quite the same problem as I, and that those who
said it was working fine were not using Debian.
Could this problem be connected with some special Debian patches to
GNU Emacs?
