emacs, latex, spellcheck and umlauts

When I try to spell check a latex document using the auctex mode, it interprets the double quites char (") as a word seperator. In the german language mode it is not a word seperator, but a character modifier (it puts double dots on the following char). This makes spell checking pretty much unusabl
