The correct solution would be to check the version in your binary and

this is not against Ubuntu, the distribution, but I would expect a

I am not sure why you are replying to Anthony, if you read his mail, you
see that he *has* stopped this.
I guess this was a honest mistake from Matthias, he accidently uploaded
a package not stripped of the Ubuntu-specific Essential: yes tags. This
is unfortunate, but no reason for
(too bad the M-F-T from d-d-a makes replies come here).
Can we move this to -project, pretty please?

which is a pretty safe assumption considered it is mandated by policy.
We had a talk about this in #debian-tech some days ago, and the general
consensus seemed to be that somebody should submit a patch for that to
dpkg.
