You reported the issue with the backported package. I just tried to
reproduce this in stretch and without the back ported archive it works
as intended. Can you please tell us with what command you installed
lazarus-1.6? And can you maybe also add the full log

packages under Ubuntu a number of years ago (inability to compile in
