As discussed this almost always built fine in the pbuilders [1] but I
acknowledge that the need for a working Java toolchain may make it
fragile. That is, however, not a bug in rJava and I intend to close this in
Lucas,
Could you please try again? rjava just built fine in my (i386) chroot.
There were some recent changes in the Java toolchain so I think it is a good
idea to try again.

Could you possible try the newest R build? It build-log for amd64 at
https://buildd.debian.org/fetch.cgi?&pkg=r-base&ver=2.9.1~20090621-1&arch=amd64&stamp=1245643247&file=log
indicates that all Java things should be detected nicely.
