There are still a couple of holes in the backtrace. Let me know if I need more
packages with
debugging enabled. See the responses below.

Yes. I just ran the following:
% sudo /usr/sbin/useradd -d /var/lib/nfs -g nogroup -s /bin/fa

thanks
I think this bug is not resolved. When I use 'id' to check a user id, I get
the error common in this bug report:

Oystein,
I dist-upgraded again today and one of the upgrades said to run
debfoster2aptitude. After running
this, my evolution installations are reported by aptitude as having broken
dependencies, but I
can't find what they are.

Using the Ctl-Alt-+/- keys works fine to switch the screen resolution. That
would lead me to rule
out the bug in X itself.

libsoup2.2-8 is based on libsoup-2.2.6 which has a known bug in the
soup-soap-message.c code. The
fix is in 2.2.6.1. (Current version is now 2.2.7) It addresses the
g_type_get_private warning,
which was causing the segfault.
There is already a debian bug on libsoup2.2. (Bug#330493)
