Thank you for the patch and the NMU.
I've had a quick look and don't see an issue with the changes. No need to
cancel the NMU.
I'll also probably port the patch to the new upstream release if it's still
not working with OpenSSL 3.0.

I had a chance to dig into this further and think I now know what's going on.
I ran the test on an AMD Seattle system (same as arm-arm-04) and
noticed that the closures test (tests/refcount/closures) didn't finish
in >150 minutes. Profiling the test using "perf" pointed to
