I had this problem as well when I upgraded to the latest version in
Testing (1.9.12-2). However, it seems to have been fixed in the
1.9.13-1, currently in Unstable. That version works for me.

Thanks for the tip, I tried 2.6.23-rc3 but it's still the same - with
ACPI I get no DVD device detected, without ACPI it works. I'm attaching
the output from dmesg and lspci both with and without acpi=off.

After lots of help from people on #debian on Freenode, and many dead
ends explored, I found that setting the kernel option acpi=off makes the
kernel (all kernels I've tested so far - 2.6.18, 2.6.21, 2.6.22 and a
custom 2.6.22.5 from kernel.org) detect the DVD. So this works as a
temporary solution.
