I just wanted to word in here that I hit exactly this bug where nothing
was working anymore (read: no firewall rules at all anymore), and after

Hello, I'm in the process of upgrading more servers to Debian 9,
and repatedly hitting this bug. I think it is serious enough to be fixed
in stable, as well. Please backport at least the small fix mentioned
above, and release as stable update.
