First of all, I think this bug is a dupe of #496334.
Second, I ran into to this issue my self with mdadm in Lenny on a raid5-array.
I fixed it by apply the patch[1] from Chris Webb[2].
After this patch was applied, it was no problem to do --assemble
--force without segmentation fault.

pango-graphite "owns" a critical bug, #471642 and dupes, since April
with no visible maintainer activity.
As it's not been released with stable before and has no reverse
dependencies, it appears to be an ideal removal candidate.
