AFAICS the fix for the startx-problem is pretty simple.
In /usr/bin/startx you have to change the line:
sysserverrc=/usr/lib/X11/xinit/xserverrc
into:
sysserverrc=/etc/X11/xinit/xserverrc

I figured that the X symlink was probably just a left over and not all that
important, so I tried deleting it and doing a reconfigure of the x packages.
