I think I found the reason for that core dump: http://w-ber.ormgas.com/html2utf8.pl If UTF-8 is really not in use and that script is loaded in ~/.irssi/startup , irssi dumps core during startup. Probably the bug is in that script rather than in irssi. But as long as I am really not yet in UTF-8-
