The README.Debian lists several backwards incompatibility warnings for
this version. Possibly the build failure is caused by one of those.

You know, as good bug reports go, this one is pretty
deficient; there is no useful information to go on, and the package
in question is not a small, self contained one to ease debugging, and
no effort has been made to dig deeper. I expected better from a
fellow developer.

This make version explicitely has incompatibilities with previous
