set abort_backspace = no
will stop this new feature. It was introduced to make the input field
work more like vim's.

As you've discovered, many Readline commands are supported, for
navigation, text clearing, etc:

Dear Maintainer,
Since upgrading to bullseye neomutt, hitting backspace on an empty
input line sends off the input for me. For an example of where
this is obnoxious, try:
(a) reply to a mail
(b) clear the To: field using backspace
