In luatex it is already replaced with pplib, and xetex and pdftex will
follow probably with TL2020.

I tend to not do it. Poppler is a huge PITA, changing APIs permanently.
The current version of sources in TL works with poppler < 0.63,
there are some prepared files (search for -newpoppler) which work with
0.63, but not anymore with 0.64.
