I tend to not do it. Poppler is a huge PITA, changing APIs permanently. The current version of sources in TL works with poppler < 0.63, there are some prepared files (search for -newpoppler) which work with 0.63, but not anymore with 0.64. This is a *JOKE* library, and I tend stop using shared poppler libs as far as possible, since it is simply too much pain for no gain. I have changed already uptimes back and forth between system and shipped poppler. Please complain to the (complete *****) upstream maintainer, but experience shows that he is well ...
