Hello,
I had the same issue and, during startup, the the log file only show:
Nov 20 11:13:15 hostname /etc/init.d/mysql[27658]: 0 processes alive and
'/usr/bin/mysqladmin --defaults-file=/etc/mysql/debian.cnf ping' resulted in
Nov 20 11:13:15 hostname /etc/init.d/mysql[27658]:
#007/usr/bin/mysqla
Hi Tzadik,
do you have libnss-mysql(-bg) installed and activated in the
/etc/nsswitch.conf?
What happens if yout try to start mysqld as root directly from the
shell? Any log output you could post here?
Regards,
Simon

I upgraded debian to wheezy and got errors with mysql-server so I
removed it. Now I can't reinstall it. I get:
$ sudo apt-get install mysql-server
