Hello,

I had the same issue and, during startup, the the log file only show:

Nov 20 11:13:15 hostname /etc/init.d/mysql[27658]: 0 processes alive and
'/usr/bin/mysqladmin --defaults-file=/etc/mysql/debian.cnf ping' resulted in
Nov 20 11:13:15 hostname /etc/init.d/mysql[27658]:
#007/usr/bin/mysqladmin: connect to server at 'localhost' failed
Nov 20 11:13:15 hostname /etc/init.d/mysql[27658]: error: 'Can't connect
to local MySQL server through socket '/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock' (2)'
Nov 20 11:13:15 hostname /etc/init.d/mysql[27658]: Check that mysqld is
running and that the socket: '/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock' exists!
Nov 20 11:13:15 hostname /etc/init.d/mysql[27658]:

Which does not should anything.
Idem with starting /usr/bin/mysqld_safe by hand.

I removed skip-locking from /etc/mysql/my.cnf and it fixed the issue.

Maybe a check should be done in the init script to make sure that the
option is not enable.

Sylvestre
