I found that if I did not base64 encode the password in the authinfo
file, things work. So, changing from:

Here is some more data. I started saslquthd in debug mode, and then
tried sending emails using my client sendmail, and then using icedove,
to see if there is a difference.
To eliminate saslauthd backends, I have tried this with
