If it's a SCSI scanner, this isn't the same issue at all; it's just that
we lack its SCSI IDs in our list.

sane-find-scanner found it. No problem with my Ubuntu 10.04
partition. I believe their /lib/udev/rules.d/70-acl.rules covers
it with:

This is an MFP device, so you're being bitten by #588300.
