Yes "--force" option has to be at the moment to build the package, I'm
working on resolving this issue.
When it comes to your other problem:

I installed the fglrx drivers from AMD, since then the artifacts don't
appear anymore. So probably this is a problem in the free AMD drivers,
or the way Maps is using them.
