I suspect that this bug is a duplicate of bug number 505609.
The bottom line is that due to a bug in the kernel maintainer
scripts, lilo does not get re-run after a kernel upgrade.
Re-try your original scenario after manually running lilo.
If necessary, add the large-memory option to /etc/l
I should add that lilo.conf has "large-memory" set.
