Gah. No, it is not possible to simply remove the 'gnome' meta-package
as this removes (at the next full-upgrade) a _number_ of other useful
packages like e.g. update-manager and several others.
Marking these packages as "manually installed" to avoid this is _not_
an acceptable solution as it means
