It seems that rtc-cmos is a part of the new RTC subsystem of the kernel, while
rtc is the old driver. See Documentation/rtc.txt in kernel source:

- edit "/etc/modprobe.d/pnp-hotplug" and change the line "alias pnp:dPNP0b00
rtc" to "alias pnp:dPNP0b00 rtc-cmos"
- create a new file "/etc/udev/rules.d/local.rules" and place the following
line:
