Probably worth adding that the libvte-common corruption was different to
the others. With the others, the /var/lib/dpkg/info/*.list file did not
exist. With libvte-common it had been replaced, apparently with the
contents of /

I had a system crash which knocked out some files in /var, including the
lists of files in each package.
I'm trying to restore, however dpkg will not even permit me to restore dpkg.
It complains that the package file lists are not available for each
