Thanks Guillem. Sounds like those fixes are sufficient for improving how dpkg handles in the situation I was caught in. Since it's a tricky scenario to reproduce, I'm happy for my part to consider the bug dealt with. I'll leave it to you to close the bug if you're confident that the new error handling is sufficient.
