Just noticed this blog entry http://www.davidpashley.com/cgi/pyblosxom.cgi/2006/05/04#gnome-terminal which seems to describe the exact problem I'm having. I've disabled the menu bar in my terminals, so I never noticed the charset option there. Indeed, as the blog says, the charset is set to ANSI_X

Package: gnome-terminal Version: 2.14.1-1 Severity: important In one of the last couple of upgrades, gnome-terminal stopped working with UTF8 chars. It won't display any non-ASCII7 chars (but just a questionmark-like-char for each byte of a multibyte sequence), I can't input any non-ascii chars a
