I'm also afflicted by this bug, which looks like it was exacerbated by enabling bootlogd (which introduces sufficient delay to allow gdm to grab VT2 before the gettys on VT1-6 are run). gdm isn't respecting the FirstVT=7 VTAllocation=true options in gdm.conf. Xorg was invoked with /usr/X
