I just wanted to thank you for responding. I changed to another mirror,
and that fixed the problem. Unfortunately, I got into this situation
from the Debain NetInst CD. I selected debian.crosslink.net, as it was
one of the mirrors in the official list presented to you during
installation.

No, it wouldn't. That would seriously screw upgrades.

On Aug 1, 2005 I installed a new installation of Debian from the Debian
netinst minimal CD image.
Once the install was complete, in order to make sure all packages were at
the latest version from the 'stable' distribution, I ran the following
commands:
apt-get
