I finally fixed this problem by replacing the DVD drive. I still think
the driver could handle drive errors much more gracefully than by
hanging up in a kernel call.

Yes, based on the various backtraces, it looks as though the kernel's
CDROM driver hangs up waiting for the drive, which in turn hangs up HAL,
which blocks the suspend.
I don't know anything about TuxOnIce; I use the /usr/

I can reproduce this in fresh-installed Lenny on a Dell Inspiron 1200,
except that it's now hald-addon-stor that hangs, not hald itself.
Here are the kernel messages that are emitted when the process hangs
(hdb is the CD drive). I don't know what causes the error, since I'm
sure I wasn't
