I can't believe this bug is still open! This is completely wrong. Amongst the bad effects are that if you say (in a normal etch xterm on a normal etch local display): TERM=xterm-color screen the key labelled <- no longer works ! (I discovered this due to debugging a friend's broken <- setup

I just ran into this same problem. In the real world, lots of apps use xterm-color as a compatibility hack to try to get xterm sequuences and ensure color support. kbs not being \177 is annoying, but doesn't matter buch. kdch1 being \177 makes such things as screen unuseable, as it helpfully tries
