I do exactly have the same problem here. If I start openafs-client, I cannot
unmount /afs anymore. It results in an hanging '/etc/init.d/openafs-client
stop' process where the umount-command runs forever. If I try to shutdown the
system, the 'halt' or 'shutdown' process also runs forever. Rest

that have this problem and we can start to understand why it works on
some machines and not others.
My machine is a ppc64 box; I see you are running i686.

you can start the afs-client work the whole day, no Problem , but if you
like to stop or restart it , if fails to stop . looking with ps-ef you
see the rc script tries to unmount /afs , which takes forever ..
