same problem here, came unexpectedly after settting brightness to zero,
then couldn't light up the screen. a reboot (I tried killing X but it
wouldn't launch again) put the screen at 100% and I was not able to
get it down with xbackl

so, now i suppose i have to find which custom setting was causing that huge
memory use. i'll take a look as soon as i can.

opening a blank tab rises it to 500 Mb. loading google reader, rises it
again to ~700. closing it, does nothing.
*side note: meory uses are givien by just looking at conky (so, whole
system's memory use is counted). if
ext (i have enough of them to not show in a single
screenshot)

i had the same bug. i solved it by adding my user to xsane and scanner
groups.
however, it woud be a good idea that it came working 'out of the box',
instead of having to modify some files.
