My PulseAudio mixer frequently comes up muted and at 50% volume. And the panel
mixer icon shows this.
But when I left click on the icon, unmute it, change the volume, close the
mixer app, the panel icon remains muted.

Edit device.map and change the sda devices to hda.

run update-grub (2) and get lots of errors
inspect the grub.cfg and all lines are empty after set root=
"ls /boot/grub/grub.*" just shows the mangled grub.cfg, no grub.cfg.new

Tried switching to grub2's non-graphical mode - same problem.
Added "set debug=all" to grub.cfg but it didn't provide any info after
the menu was presented, and then froze.
Inspected the bios settings but there is little there and nothing
related to the keyboard.
