With the workaround applied, I did 'apt-get update' and then 'apt-get
dist-upgrade', and in the list of updates was a kernel update. The
installation flashed the kernel, and after rebooting the DNS-323 after
the update finished, I undid the apt workaround and reinstalled apt
using 'apt-get install
Wow, I should have known to do that. My apologies for the troubles. I
followed the advice in the previous post, and rebooting worked. I have
no clue how the RAM got corrupt.

The recompilation trick worked fine for a while, but now I seem to be
back at square one with the same exact error showing up again, and this
time, I cannot get out of it. Now, not even recompiling apt solves the
problem. Help!
(P.S. I know one thing for sure. The applications in the
/usr/lib/
