All I can tell is that HylaFax+ worked but HylaFax didn't.
(There must be a reason for the HylaFax+ folks to continue the
project after all.)

remember the latter supports an extended protocol (more "jparm"s
or something) which is required to store meta-data for multi-user
setups.

the current upstream release does not have regressions in stability.
