Previously the partially composed emails were in
~/.kde/share/apps/kmail/autosave but they are not there now.

I had the same problem as this bug with 4.4.3 but since moving to unstable to
see if it would go away with 4.4.5, it did!
Please fix this for Squeeze users as it is a really annoying bug. I had to
close and reopen kontact every time I started up my machine.

I have reported this to the Kontact maintainers. It is not a serious bug.
To reproduce it, begin composing an email and put a spelling error in the
subject line. From the tools menu, invoke the spell checker. The error will
not be recognized.
