The patch stops the crashing for me, but a VPN session doesn't get
established. Maybe problem my end. Or maybe related to a little part
missing, which is on the upstream patch ?

Checking with ifconfig lo gets created but eth0 is missing (but is mentioned
in ifstate).
So I am open to try any suggestions which might both a) fix this for me and
b) help prevent this happening to others when initscripts gets updated.

Sorry forgot to mention, that the mail notifications are via the MSN
protocol. And I use the HTTP method to connect to my msn account
(otherwise it fails). Attached is auto generated back trace.

Have been suffering from this for a long time. When New Mail
Notifiications is disabled, i have no issues with it, but when
it's enabled, it generally crashes either when a mail is detected,
or when interacting with the notification window.
