I ended up discovering that the bug in question happens due to a bug in the
kernel that was only patched in the following kernel versions:

[4.14.13

After I put my login credentials and put my steam guard code, the program stays
for bit in the background until it gives a "can't connect to steam servers"
error.
I tried solving most of the errors on the log file until only a few remained.
