I did some testing this evening, and can confirm that on Wheezy and Jessie, adding a file to /lib/udev/rules.d/ containing the following lines will prevent modem-manager from crashing Palm M500, M505, and M515 handhelds. If it's beneficial, I can try to dig through the source for the Palm/Viso

Can the following USB VID/PID combination be added to the blacklist of devices that modem-manager should not attempt to probe? VID 0830, PID 0003. Device is an old Palm M515 PDA, modem-manager probing breaks HotSync with pilot-link, JPilot, etc. and casues the Palm to hang with a "Fatal Error"

I am seeing the same issue. To me it looks like lxpanel is running, but does not actually display the panel on screen. If you open a terminal, run 'killall lxpanel' and then restart lxpanel with 'lxpanel &' it actually appears on screen. In my case this is on a new install just done this morn
