I am seeing the same issue.  To me it looks like lxpanel is running, but does 
not actually display the panel on screen.  If you open a terminal, run 'killall 
lxpanel' and then restart lxpanel with 'lxpanel &' it actually appears on 
screen.  In my case this is on a new install just done this morning on an amd64 
architecture machine.
